Nintendo and games in society and fandom

The gaming press has picked up on two interesting stories from Nintendo’s 70th Annual Meeting With Shareholders.
Kotaku reported here on Nintendo’s CEO Satoru Iwata intention to spread a more positive message of gaming to the broader community and The Escapist has an interesting story on Nintendo’s approach to fans appropriating their content here.
Both these stories touch upon some important issues around the social context games exist in (Iwata’s recognition of the stigma games have amongst the broader public) and the paradox of IPR – companies want to police and control their content to avoid it losing value, but you risk criminilizing members of the core community who are the companies strongest brand advocates by policing thier parodies, fan pages etc.
